WANTED: BUSINESSES TO SELL!

Why, because we have buyers!

Next week, we’re running a workshop “How to Successfully Buy a Business” for first time business buyers. Ideally it will be fabulous to practice of live stock, but case studies might just have to do… for now!

Had a great lunch today, with 39 fellow service providers to the SME market. The beauty was that I was the only Broker (along with one other Valuer)  as there are not too many of us that actually have experience in selling. I have already set up a number of business discussions for next week. Excellent.

Only this week the AIBB Small Business Sales Index for June 2014 indicated it’s a Buyers market. However, I’m not sure how that’s going to play out if there’s no stock to offer them to buy.

Interesting times…

Sell Yourself First, even as a Business Owner wanting to sell…

ChangeThis.com_SellYourselfFirst

Even when a business is being sold, whilst the business can stack up, it usually rests finally on the shoulders of the owner to get the deal over the line. If the potential buyer thinks the seller is at all dodgy, the deal will not go ahead… as you can imagine!

“People buy you first! It doesn’t matter if you’re meeting people for the first time in a social or business situation, you won’t get far unless you sell yourself first. This comes as a surprise to many people who just show up without thinking about the impression they make on others. In the case of sales professionals, they may prepare their presentations well, but not pay as much attention to preparing themselves as to how they, personally, come across to potential clients.

The basic premise of this article is that ‘it matters.’ It matters if you show up 20 minutes early (awkward in social situations), 10 minutes early (usually appropriate for business), on time (okay in social situations, maybe not for business) or 10 minutes late (never acceptable).

It matters if you’re dressed and groomed appropriately—including whether or not you’re wearing the right shoes (and that they’re in good condition). When you want to capture the attention of others and have them view you as a competent individual, dress and act like one—appropriately for the situation in which you’re meeting them.”

WANTED: BUSINESSES TO SELL!

Who knew I’d be actively asking for Business Owners looking to sell to come forth?

I have buyers ready to buy but the sellers seem to be hanging on that little bit longer.
Sure, there is always the more churn type businesses around, like cafes and shops, but businesses of quality in my niche (i.e. Online and Professional Services) have seemed to stopped exploring the sell option… for the time being.

Only this week the AIBB Small Business Sales Index for June 2014 indicated it’s a Buyers market. However, I’m not sure how that’s going to play out if there’s no stock to offer them to buy.

the latest AIBB Small Business Sales Index – June 2014

AIBB Sales Index_June 2014

Not surprisingly negative speculation in the media prior to the Federal Budget being tabled in May and the inability of the Government to sell its budget message has caused a loss of confidence in the marketplace for SME sales during this Quarter. The bump in optimism following the 2013 Federal election has been replaced with the ‘Budget Blues’, however, sales of Small Businesses are still occurring in spite of the fact that sales prices paid for businesses seem to be dropping.

“Whilst market conditions for business sales have deteriorated from those experienced before the Federal Budget was tabled, we believe the market will adjust over time to the new reality and provided overseas events stabilise it should be business as usual. If conditions deteriorate overseas then business sales pricing will fall as business confidence fades and vendors will need to ‘follow the market down’ if they want to sell” said Paul Nielsen, AIBB Vice President and Deputy Chair of COSBOA.

‘Unsolicited Offers’ have overtaken ‘Retirement’ as the primary reason for Sellers seeking a sale indicating that Buyers are becoming more aggressive in seeking discounts and Sellers are now ready to listen. Time will tell if this trend continues. Of greater concern is the second highest indicator of the reasons for sale being ‘Pending Insolvency’.

Having just returned from 10 days away, it’s most interesting to see what’s happening in the market.

Certainly, from a Business Broker point of view, it’s worth taking time off July/August as most Business Owners are too busy doing their EOFY activities to think about buying/selling businesses. It’s about now the phone starts ringing… and it has!

Just this week, my colleague had a call where they want to sell a number of franchises they currently own and create a new franchise in another industry. And they are prepared to fund it themselves, no need for banks. Seems to be a bit of a trend happening around the financing question at the moment. What we’re appreciating is that there is definitely money around to buy businesses, but the business has to be of quality to even be considered.

In fact, if banks have to get involved, there is every likelihood (unless they are franchise arrangements) that the banks won’t even look at the transaction (meaning they will look at it and then reject it) or expect that the home is used as security.

Are you prepared to do that? What choice do you have?
