TEMpting; How Business Buyers and Sellers Have Been Tempted This Week…

How Saleable is Your Business in 2014? How Saleable do you want Your Business 2014? What are you waiting for? GET YOUR SCORE…

Started some of the renovation of the transferred website this week, with more to come. Best way is to step this out anyway, given I want to know what works and what doesn’t. I won’t know that if I do it all at once will I? Yes, I do need to double the numbers first off, to make it worth continuing the process, but systematically and consistently is the way to go.

Are you 45-55 years of age and realising there is no Job future for you?
Well, not at the level you want at least?

It’s becoming more apparent that once you’ve been retrenched from the high-paying gig, any time after 45, it’s not easy to replace it. Given Tony and Joe want us working until 70, that means there is approx. 20 years of earning you’re not participating in, unless you come up with a better plan.

The answer to that plan, I believe, is to buy a business.

Not only are you not waiting 2 years to make money (which is, on average, how long it takes to make money if you started your own thing) but you are also buying into revenue. Even if you did nothing else but maintain status quo, enabling you to understand the business from the inside, you’re creating revenue and keeping some of it. And if you did that for say 6 months, before you start tinkering with it, you would then be in a position to have locked the revenue in whilst getting ready to increase it with initiatives you’re ready to roll out.

You just can’t do so with any other medium…

the Magic Triangle of company and career health…

theMagicTriangle

“While giving speeches, I began to wonder why some companies had blasted out of the recession in fine shape while others had not yet escaped, as if sick or dysfunctional. When a human being is sick or dysfunctional—or just not thriving—the root cause is always found in one of three areas. Picture a triangle. One side is physical health. Another side is emotional. A third side is social. If you are thriving on just two sides but not on a third, your entire health is at risk. Ask an otherwise physically and mentally healthy person who is struggling with social health, going through a traumatic divorce, say.

What does robust health look like in a company or career? Can we find a similar triangle that can help us locate the root cause when our companies and careers are underperforming? I believe so. But warning: I will spend most of the time discussing the least appreciated side of the triangle—the soft edge.”

Is it time to think about your Soft Edge and the Magic Triangle?

Most interesting week!

My past Consulting world is starting to make its presence felt. And it feels OK. When I sold my business 3 years ago, I thought Consulting would be the last place I would consider playing in again. And this would still be the case if I had not been contacted by two separate parties this week about doing a project or two. Both of reasonably considerable size too.

Interesting the timing on this too. The 3-year restraint of trade clause I agreed to abide by ends at the end of June, that is, in two weeks time. Is the Universe providing? Maybe, if you believe in such things. Or is it all serendipitous, who can say. I do find it worthy of observation and consideration nonetheless.

Who knows, these may not go anywhere. However, given they both tie in with my now well-tuned Exit Strategy filter, they could end up being a lot of fun. Looking forward to see what transpires…

Not sure this one is going anywhere now… bugger! However, I did have a conversation with a chap this week, who assures me he is the one to go in and turn this around. And maybe he is. Just need to introduce him in, once he supplies his snapshot of why he should be considered.

Due Diligence is now done, with some argy bargy about certain declarations which has resulted in a price revision. Nothing major but relevant nonetheless. Next, contracts!

how’s the investment of your Time, Energy and Money working for you?

ChangeThis.com_NatureInvesting

When I first meet Business Owners who want to talk shop, I eventually ask them 3 basic questions:

  1. is your Business making money?
  2. is your Business making a profit?
  3. are you paying yourself?

In 90% of cases, I do not get a resounding YES to all of these.
What I usually get is a “oh yes” to #1, “sometimes” to #2, and “not really” to #3.

If the answer to all 3 questions is not a big, fat, hearty YES, then what are you really investing your time, energy and money in?

“We are all investors. We invest our time, our energy, our money. We invest every single day, as citizens, as consumers, as businesspeople. At its core, done well, investing is aligned with the same principles that govern natural systems. It involves connection, exchange, and mutual benefit: we humans invented this activity, to serve our own needs, our communities, and our planet. For any business endeavour, wise investing—of human capital, social capital, physical capital, and financial capital—is at the heart of success. […]

We need to reengage with investing in its essential, connected form—to reintegrate our professions with the real world, instead of the world on the screen. But how?”
